Lake Bled

It’s like a warm Windermere here.

We had two full days, and spent the first going all round the lake. It’s only about a 6-7km walk, with a bit of uphill if you go to the Castle, which we did.

There’s loads to do, and loads of people doing it. It would be a bit of a pain to have a car here, but it’s not needed at all. We did take a taxi to and from the stations (Bled Jezero on arrival, and Lesce-Bled when we left) but it would be possible to walk. Just a bit whingier.

Our first stop was an archery tent at the campsite… Gideon got a fine hit on the Coronavirus, and they both had a good time with their ten shots. The woman running it was really good with them, and because we were early there was no queue. I loved how simple the bows were, not a carbon composite but all wooden.

The castle was pretty cool. It showed a lot about the history of the area, since most of the original furniture and artefacts had long been sold. Geology, Stone, Iron, and Bronze Age finds, and the more recent history of the area were laid out well as we wandered round feeling like we were in Winterfell.

After lunch and a nap/play in the park, we continued round and found the summer toboggan run. A good bit of bogganing, as per the Angusism that it’ll be known by from now on.

The chairlift was maybe more worrying than the ride, for us non-skiers! But we all managed it.

We wrapped up the day with a short swim, and a big bowl of pasta and games… and the promise of a lie in too. Jennie and I shared a bottle of wine on the balcony: having a bit of outdoor space in each of our places has been really great and this was no exception.

Today we had a fairly chilled day, just reading until lunchtime, but then we did feel that we just had to spend some more time on and in the water. We hired a rowing boat, and took it over to the island (“Can I row now? I want to be lookout! Why do we have to wait? This walk is so far! Can we have an ice cream? Can’t someone else go ahead and get it while I wait here? I want to go for a swim now!”)

Sometimes I think we should try doing exactly what the children say, when they say it. Nothing would happen of course, the attention span is too short 🤣
